Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World (2019) by Cal Newport

As somewhat of a "tech guy" I highly suggest this book to everybody that feels, deep inside, that the technology you love doesn't really love you back. Or to anybody that feels to waste too much time in front of the screen. I started really using computers in the 90's, so I was not there during the golden ages, when people had to program themselves their operating system, but I neverthless notice a swift decadence in the quality of the technology we use. We are quickly becaming engulfed in it, with every object around us having a processor and an internet connection to tell some random corporation about our habits and how to exploit them. It's would not be a problem per se, the main issue here is that our brain is simply not wired to fight agains this devices: human will always follow the path of least resistance, and now this path is waiting for us everyday, simply standing in our pockets. We cannot win this fight.

Cal Newport does a great job in this book teaching us some cool methods to avoid this fight or, even better, to accustomate ourselves in using our limited free time. After reading the various chapters we will understand how, in a world that screams freedom at every corner, we are in reality giving away our freedom for a couple of bits of useless rewards. And don't get me wrong: it's not a book chanting the greatness of luddism or advocating for an amish lifestyle. It will just help you to do more conscious choices: instead of brainlessly scroll for the tenth time today through your social media feed, wouldn't it be better to learn to play an instrument? Or craft an awesome wooden table? As the writer goes on you'll understand that is not just a mindless excercise of stoicism, it has actual usefulness. A lot of scientific studies are cited in the book detailing how this tweaks (that will seems very hard task at the beginning) will improve your lifestyle in unimaginable ways.

We always complaing on how we don't have time in today society, but this is only partially true. Buy this book, read it, and if you embrace it you will see your life changing. Trust me
